Have You Tested Your Drinking Water Lately?
Even if your water tastes and smells fine, that doesn't always mean that it is safe to drink. As a homeowner with a private well, it is YOUR responsibility to make sure that your water is safe for you and your family to drink.
UConn Extension has a new program to help you get your water tested. We are providing low-cost water testing and educational workshops in rural areas of Connecticut. The first workshop will provide information about groundwater, your well, and potential contaminants. We will then schedule follow-up meetings to collect your water sample and help you interpret the results.
Our tests cover total coliform bacteria, nitrates, sodium, chloride, fluoride, pH, chloride, hardness, sulfate, turbidity, iron, lead, arsenic, uranium, and manganese.

There is no fee to attend these workshops, but if you would like to have your water tested it will cost $200 (this is normally over $350). Due to the popularity of this program we have exhausted our grant funds that were offsetting most of the costs to analyze samples. We are actively applying for more grants to continue this program with low cost sampling.

Please note that these results are not valid for official purposes* such as a real estate transaction. While the majority of analyses are performed at a state certified laboratory, we do not include odor and color, and the bacteria test is performed in our laboratory at the University of Connecticut. While we use the same method as the state certified laboratories, the bacteria results aren’t “official” unless performed at a state certified lab.
